What is RHCT certification
RHCT certification stands at bottom level or entry level Linux certification. A person having RHCT certification can apply for advanced RHCE certification. RHCT was first of all introduced in Jan 2003. It is offered by Red Hat incorporation in USA. Clearing this certification means that a person understands the live Linux system fully at basic level.
RHCT is live, lab performance based test that measures the actual competency in system administration, comprising proper installation and configuration of Linux system at enterprise level and connecting it to a live network services. He must understand the limitations of hardware and how to configurate the basic networking, basic host security, file system and X window system of a Linux Red Hat Enterprise. He must also know setup client-side network services needed to attach the production work, and take out troubleshooting and basic diagnostics. The objective of RHCT exam is to assure that a person have a basic system administrative skills and minimum knowledge to perform for professional responsibilities in installing, configuring, attaching, and supporting Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems in a production setup. It is conducted only at authorized Red Hat certified centers so a candidate should keep in mind the travelling and staying cost along with the normal dues of RHCT exam. The RHCT Exam can be under taken on the last day of RH133 Red Hat Enterprise Linux System Administration (4.5 days), or taken alone as RH202 RHCT Exam. Those who take the RHCE test and clear RHCT competencies included in RH302 exam are granted with RHCE certification. It consists of two sections:
Section 1: Trouble shooting and system maintenance. Here time duration is 1 hour.
Section 2: System installation and configuration. It has 2 hour time duration.
To successfully pass out the exam a candidate must have to completely attempt all the trouble shooting questions as they are all compulsory and obtain 70% or higher in section 2.There are no multiple-choice questions as it is a lab based exam so a candidate have to wait the result for three days. They will receive the result via e-mail. There is sobering news by Red Hat sources that barely 40% of RHCT test takers can clear the exam in first attempt while in the second attempt this shoots up to75%.
